How Google Ads Works for Affiliates and Performance Marketers in 2026

The auction, the AI campaign types and the policy traps — what an affiliate or app marketer needs to know before spending on Google.

Google Ads is an auction. Every time someone searches, watches YouTube or opens a site in the Google Display Network, Google runs an auction among advertisers whose targeting matches. The winner is not simply the highest bidder: Google ranks ads by a combination of bid, expected click-through rate, ad relevance, landing-page experience and the context of the search. You pay only when someone clicks (on most search campaigns) — and usually less than your maximum bid.

For affiliates and performance marketers, Google offers the highest-intent traffic on the internet. It also has some of the strictest policies, so understanding both the mechanics and the rules matters.

How the auction decides who shows

Google calculates Ad Rank for each eligible ad. The main inputs:

  • Your bid — set manually or by a Smart Bidding strategy.
  • Quality — expected click-through rate, ad relevance to the search and landing-page experience. Google summarises these as a 1–10 Quality Score at keyword level.
  • Ad Rank thresholds — minimum quality an ad must reach to show at all.
  • Context — the search term, device, location, time and other signals.
  • Assets — sitelinks, callouts and other extensions that improve the ad's expected impact.

Better quality lowers what you pay for the same position. That is why a relevant ad and a fast, useful landing page are not optional extras — they are cost savings.

The campaign types that matter in 2026

AI Max for Search adds broader query matching and automatically generated text and URLs to a Search campaign. Performance Max buys across all Google channels from one campaign; Google added more channel-level reporting from late 2025, but you still get less control than with separate campaigns. If you need full control of landing pages — common for affiliates and compliance-heavy offers — turn off final URL expansion.

Smart Bidding and conversion tracking

Smart Bidding strategies (Maximise conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS) use Google's machine learning to set a bid for every auction. They only work as well as the conversion data you feed them:

  • Track the event that makes money — a qualified lead, purchase or deposit — not just a page view.
  • Use enhanced conversions or offline conversion imports to send back conversions that happen later in your CRM or backend.
  • For apps, send in-app events through Firebase or your MMP integration.
  • Use Consent Mode where required (EEA, UK and other regions), so Google can model conversions when users decline cookies.

What affiliates need to know about Google's policies

Google allows affiliate advertising, but with conditions that catch many affiliates out:

  • Destination requirements: landing pages must be functional, original and useful. Pages whose only purpose is to send users elsewhere — often called bridge pages — are disallowed.
  • Unoriginal content: copying the advertiser's page or using thin, duplicate templates leads to disapprovals.
  • Misrepresentation: fake scarcity, hidden fees, false claims of affiliation or celebrity endorsements lead to account suspensions.
  • Restricted verticals: gambling, financial services, crypto, healthcare and dating require certifications or are limited by country.
  • Trademarks: many advertisers ban brand bidding in their affiliate terms, independent of Google's own trademark rules.
  • Circumventing systems: running multiple accounts to evade suspensions or cloaking (showing reviewers a different page from users) results in permanent bans.

Always read the current policy pages in the Google Ads Help Center before launching in a regulated vertical.

A sensible setup for a performance campaign

  1. Define the conversion and test it end to end before spending.
  2. Start with exact and phrase match on high-intent keywords, with a solid negative-keyword list.
  3. Write ads that match the search and send traffic to a page that delivers on the ad.
  4. Use Maximise conversions until you have enough data (often 30+ conversions a month), then set a target CPA or ROAS.
  5. Review search terms weekly; add negatives and new keywords.
  6. Test one big change at a time — bidding, landing page or ad — so you know what moved results.

App campaigns are largely automated: you provide text, images, videos and a target (installs or in-app actions), and Google places ads across Search, Play, YouTube and the AdMob network. Link Google Ads to your MMP or Firebase so in-app events flow back for optimisation. Our AppsFlyer setup guide covers the MMP side.

FAQ

Yes, if your ads and landing pages follow Google's policies and the advertiser's programme terms allow paid search. Thin bridge pages, direct linking where prohibited and trademark misuse are the usual reasons for disapprovals.

What is a good Quality Score?

Seven or above is generally healthy. Improve it with tighter keyword-to-ad relevance and a faster, more relevant landing page.

Is Performance Max good for affiliates?

It can work for advertisers with strong conversion data, but affiliates often need tighter control over landing pages, placements and brand terms than Performance Max allows. Many start with Search campaigns.

Why was my Google Ads account suspended?

The most common reasons are circumventing systems, misrepresentation, unacceptable business practices or suspicious payment activity. Appeal through the Help Center with evidence; do not open a new account to evade a suspension.
